LAZZEN Gives a Boost to Saudi Red Sea New City in an Effort to Build a Green Low-carbon City in the Desert

Release time: 2024-02-22 Publisher: By Nader

With deepening policies for China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, China has been increasingly connected with other countries, more and more Chinese companies have carried out projects overseas along with joint exploration of cooperation opportunities in the international energy market, while Saudi Vision 2030 coincides with the development plan under the Belt and Road Initiative.

As part of Saudi Vision 2030, the Red Sea New City energy storage project is currently the world's largest energy storage project under construction, with an energy storage capacity of 1,300MWh, and it is also the first large commercial public utility project with multiple complementary energy systems in the world.

POWERCHINA and Huawei have actively participated in Saudi Arabia's energy transition program with joint efforts in pushing forward the Red Sea New City energy storage project. LAZZEN, Huawei's partner, provides customized intelligent power distribution solutions relating to energy storage for this project.

After completion, the Red Sea New City, a "new-generation city", will derive all electric power from new energy sources, making the Red Sea tourist area receive domestic and foreign tourists for one million person-times every year by totally depending on renewable energy sources, bringing about off-grid power supply fully based on clean energy. Such effort could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 500,000 tons per year.

The desert in Tabuk Province in western Saudi Arabia, where the Red Sea New City is situated, is marked by high heat, little precipitation, large temperature difference, frequent strong sand wind all the year round. As the temperature within energy storage containers even hits 80 degrees centigrade, high temperature accelerates component aging, and causes insulation failure, short circuit. Meanwhile, new energy is fluctuant and volatile, making it easy to incur abnormal current and overheating leading to short circuit within batteries, presenting high requirements for high voltage and high breaking in photovoltaic field.

In response to sandy landform with high temperature, LAZZEN has developed photovoltaic circuit breakers for energy storage through technological innovation and material optimization, which are characterized by high breaking, high performance and small volume.LAZZEN also addresses temperature rise by such solutions as widening busbars and optimizing contacts, and prevents salt mist erosion by optimizing ACB external metal materials.
